{"id":157,"date":"2010-04-02T11:02:36","date_gmt":"2010-04-02T17:02:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.canteraconsultants.com\/tech\/?p=157"},"modified":"2010-04-02T11:02:36","modified_gmt":"2010-04-02T17:02:36","slug":"the-passing-of-an-era","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.canteraconsultants.com\/tech\/?p=157","title":{"rendered":"The passing of an era"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many people are not aware of the fact that Albuquerque gave birth to both the Personal Computer, and Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we get word that Dr. Edwards, who developed the hardware for the first personal computer has passed away.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.canteraconsultants.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/dredwards-170x300.jpg\" alt=\"dredwards\" title=\"dredwards\" width=\"170\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-158\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.canteraconsultants.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/dredwards-170x300.jpg 170w, http:\/\/www.canteraconsultants.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/dredwards.jpg 289w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 170px) 100vw, 170px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><\/a>With the passing of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ed_Roberts_(computers)\">Dr. Henry Edward Roberts<\/a>, I am reminded of one of Albuquerque&#8217;s first failings &#8211; the loss of Microsoft, which was incorporated in our fair city, to Bill Gate&#8217;s home town of Redmond (Seattle area), WA.<\/p>\n<p>This was Albuquerque&#8217;s first wake up call that they needed to focus on one of the four factors of production, that it wasn&#8217;t enough to just have more PhD&#8217;s per capita than the rest of the country, they needed to have access to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capital_(economics)\">capital<\/a>, because without it, companies had to move to other locales that could provide money for their expansion.<\/p>\n<p>The <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/nationworld\/wire\/sns-ap-us-obit-computer-designer,0,6787474.story\">Los Angeles Times<\/a><\/em> has a great obituary for Dr. Edwards that includes his time as a Sandia Labs scientist and the founding of his company, MITS.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.canteraconsultants.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/450px-mits_calculator_model_1440_1972.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" \n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.canteraconsultants.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/450px-mits_calculator_model_1440_1972-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"450px-mits_calculator_model_1440_1972\" title=\"450px-mits_calculator_model_1440_1972\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-159\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.canteraconsultants.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/450px-mits_calculator_model_1440_1972-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.canteraconsultants.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/450px-mits_calculator_model_1440_1972.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many people are not aware of the fact that Albuquerque gave birth to both the Personal Computer, and Microsoft.
